Categorizing approaches combining rule-based and case-based reasoning

چکیده
Rule-based and case-based reasoning are two popular approaches used in intelligent systems. Rules usually represent general knowledge, whereas cases encompass knowledge accumulated from specific (specialized) situations. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages, which are proved to be complementary in a large degree. So, it is well-justified to combine rules and cases to produce effective hybrid approaches, surpassing the disadvantages of each component method. In this paper, we first present advantages and disadvantages of rule-based and case-based reasoning and show that they are complementary. We then discuss the deficiencies of existing categorization schemes for integrations of rule-based and case-based representations. To deal with those deficiencies, we introduce a new categorization scheme. Finally, we briefly present representative approaches for the final categories of our scheme.

An architecture is presented for combining rule-based and case-based reasoning. The architecture is intended for domains that are understood reasonably well, but still imperfectly. It uses a set of rules, which are taken to be only approximately correct, to obtain a preliminary answer for a given problem; it then draws analogies from cases to handle exceptions to the rules. Having rules togethe...
متن کاملThe Improvement of Response Modeling: Combining Rule-Induction and Case-Based Reasoning
Direct mail is a typical example for response modeling to be used. In order to decide which people will receive the mailing, the potential customers are divided into two groups or classes (buyers and non-buyers) and a response model is created. Since the improvement of response modeling is the purpose of this paper, we suggest a combined approach of rule-induction and case-based reasoning. The ...
متن کاملAn Exception Handling of Rule-Based Reasoning Using Case-Based Reasoning
In this paper, we propose the CCAR (Combining Case-based And Rule-based reasoning) model for an exception handling of Rule-based Reasoning using Case-based Reasoning. The central idea of the model proposed in this paper is to represent the exception of a rule as a case, and to utilize the case for a solution to a problem, and then to search the case memory to retrieve a case which violates the ...
متن کاملA Margin-based Model with a Fast Local Searchnewline for Rule Weighting and Reduction in Fuzzynewline Rule-based Classification Systems
Fuzzy Rule-Based Classification Systems (FRBCS) are highly investigated by researchers due to their noise-stability and interpretability. Unfortunately, generating a rule-base which is sufficiently both accurate and interpretable, is a hard process. Rule weighting is one of the approaches to improve the accuracy of a pre-generated rule-base without modifying the original rules. Most of the pro...
متن کاملIntegrations of Rule-Based and Case-Based Reasoning
Rule-based and case-based reasoning are two popular approaches used for problem solving in intelligent systems. They are natural alternatives in knowledge representation. Rules usually represent general knowledge, whereas cases encompass knowledge accumulated from specific (specialized) situations. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. Due to their interchangeable nature, rules and ca...
